California Runtz Automatic is a 60/40 indica-dominant hybrid developed for the Sensi Seeds Breeding Grounds project in partnership with our friends at Humboldt Seed Company. This strain takes the Feminized version of Forbidden Runtz (Forbidden Fruit and Runtz) and crosses that with Ruderalis Indica to give these plants the autoflowering trait.

The result is a strain that’s incredibly short but features a surprisingly open, airy frame, ideal for growers working with limited space. As an autoflowering strain, growers won’t need to worry about things like light schedules, making these plants a great choice for busy growers who might not have the time for daily plant maintenance. These short and robust plants perform exceptionally well in colder climates, which, combined with their short flowering period, makes them a top pick for outdoor growers with shorter, colder growing seasons.

Growth pattern of California Runtz Automatic

California Runtz Automatic cannabis seeds grow into extremely short plants with a surprisingly open frame and rather long internodal spacing. Growers should expect plants with a thick main stem that supports a single cola at the top and smaller buds growing between the cola and the lower canopy. The lateral branches are incredibly short and thick with dense, golfball-sized buds growing from every flowering site.

Indoor growers can expect California Runtz Automatic plants to be ready for harvest at a height of 25-80 cm while they produce heavy yields of 250-325 grams per square metre over their 60 to 65-day flowering cycle. If grown outdoors, don’t expect these plants to get much taller as they top out around 100 cm while producing 125-250 grams per plant.

California Runtz Automatic plants produce golfball-sized buds with a deep purple to green colouration, a heavy coating of frosty, sugary trichomes from the Forbidden Runtz lineage, and fiery orange pistils. Thanks to their short stature and relatively few branches, these plants produce a rather small number of fairly large, dense flowers with moderate vegetation, which combine to make trimming relatively simple.

As an autoflowering strain, growers can’t control much about the final size and shape of these plants, and they don’t respond well to more advanced growing techniques like a screen of green (SCROG) or mainlining. However, the short and thick lateral branches can be lollipopped. Additionally, these factors also make this strain a fantastic pick for a sea of green (SOG) setup.
