Hempseed hummus is a great snack food and is popular at parties, picnics and when relaxing with some munchies. This version is simple to make and tasty as well as very healthy- the hempseed provides essential fatty acids and protein, the chickpeas are high in fibre as well as iron and other essential minerals, and the tahini provides calcium.
For many years the Sensi Seeds café in Amsterdam (just over the bridge from the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum) served the Sensi Shake, a delicious and nutritious concoction of fresh fruit and hempseed whose recipe was kept secret. The café became a Sensi Seed shop and, as drinks are no longer served, the recipe can now be shared! (serves two)

His twin daughters suffer from Niemann Pick Type C, often referred to as “Childhood Alzheimer’s.” Since the 2006 diagnosis, Hugh and his wife Chris have been researching new methods of treatment for this rare and fatal neurodegenerative disease.

Sensi Seeds likes to co-operate with artists who are pro-cannabis. “There’s no way they’re NOT pro-cannabis,” I tell the boss. “Can I try getting in touch?” In which I perform a reverse blag on the Levellers, talk with them about hemp, and bounce randomly like a joyful pinball when they play the Melkweg.

A side effect of this generosity is that some of the seeds grow into plants - and each one sends an inarguable visual signal that the country’s cannabis prohibition policies are a failure.
We are heading for HempFlax. Despite having worked for Sensi since 2006, I haven’t been to our industrial-hemp-producing sister company before. “Thank you for smoking!” says our host cheerfully, passing a cigarette box full of pre-rolled joints to the back of the car where Clara, Albert and Carlos of Marihuana Televisión are blinking in the morning sun.
On the 15th of June 2014, in the late afternoon, I am standing in a grassy field smoking a big fat hash joint. Sunbeams slant through drifts of smoke, refracting through huge soap-bubbles blown by beautiful women in carnival masks and chased by a crowd of excited kids. The sound of generic reggae mingles with laughing and talking and the smells of food and cannabis. If I squint towards the trees across the crowds of people I could almost be in the Greenfields area at Glastonbury.
Ancient China fascinates me. When Martijn and I were lucky enough to interview Robert Connell Clarke, I wanted to ask a thousand questions about his travels through the south-west of the Middle Kingdom, with its dreamlike landscape and pockets of culture that have remained essentially unchanged for hundreds, if not thousands, of years; remote enough to have so far escaped the eradication of all things ancient that began with Mao.
In 1990, Jack Herer travelled to the Netherlands to visit his good friend Ben Dronkers. Spontaneously, they decided to film the conversation, and this tape remained unpublished... until now.
Doede de Jong has been quietly, yet openly, growing cannabis in his greenhouse for many years. He used organic methods, love and care, and his skills as a gardener to produce a single modest harvest a year, with a top yield of about 3 kg in total. Now he faces imprisonment and a fine that may cost him his house.
