Crime rates dropped in Denver

By now it is common knowledge that on the 1st of January this year the state of Colorado legalised the recreational use of cannabis, becoming the first state in America to do so. One of the arguments of the opponents was that crime would increase because of legalisation. However, this seems to have been proved a fallacy, according to statistics released by the Denver authorities.

This week it was announced that crime rates in Denver, the capital city of Colorado, have dropped during the first four months of this year. That is good news for the city and good news for proponents of the legalisation of cannabis.

The figures show that the number of homicides dropped by nearly 53 percent, compared to the same period last year. The number of sex crimes has decreased by 13.6 percent, the number of robberies by 4.8 percent and the number of assaults by 3.7 percent . Also, all non-violent crimes such as car theft and burglaries have decreased. Only the number of incidents of arson has risen, from 20 to 47, meaning an increase of 135 percent. All in all, the overall crime fell by 10.6 percent in Denver.

Although these declines are not directly attributable to the legalisation of cannabis, it is, to say the least, remarkable. In addition, the state welcomed 1.9 million dollars (approximately 1.4 million euro) in tax revenues from the sale of legal cannabis which will presumably increase to 30 million dollars by the end of this year.

Sensi Seeds is delighted with these figures. It takes the wind out of the sails of those who are against legalisation because it conclusively proves that the arguments they put forward are wrong. And this is not the only example. Numerous studies underscore the various medicinal properties of the cannabis plant, even for conditions that were previously linked to cannabis use. The flow of positive news does not seem to stop. Read all about it on the Sensi Seeds blog.
