New company brings cannabis and hemp together

One of the most accessible methods of consuming cannabis is in a joint, which is why many Cannabis Social Clubs, Dutch coffeeshops and US cannabis dispensaries make joints available, often packaged in plastic tubes. But why use traditional plastic when these containers can also be crafted from organic hemp plastic?

One of the most accessible methods of consuming cannabis is in a joint, which is why many Cannabis Social Clubs, Dutch coffeeshops and US cannabis dispensaries make joints available, often packaged in plastic tubes. But why use traditional plastic when these containers can also be crafted from organic hemp plastic?

Dutch cannabis entrepreneur Nol van Schaik teamed up with German hemp expert Pit Demmer to put this question to rest. Together, they have collaborated on various cannabis products and gadgets for cannabis consumers, all produced using environmentally-friendly materials. One of their first products is the biodegradable joint tube made from hemp plastic.

Recognition at Expogrow

Van Schaik and Demmer were present at Expogrow in Irun, Spain, from 11 to 13 September 2015 to introduce their joint tubes to the public. They were a hit and the tubes even won an award straight off the bat during the Expogrow Cannabis Cup, in the category of Best Hemp Product. What a way to kick-start their product, Van Schaik’s company Gagatrading and Demmer’s company Cannaparts! In addition, the Expogrow organisation asked them to produce next year’s consumption tokens and plastic cups – using hemp plastic, of course.

Cannabinoids versus fibres

Cannabis and hemp are two names for the same plant. The difference between the two is that they are cultivated for different uses. Cannabis contains active substances called cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, which have medicinal and psychoactive qualities. Organic, aromatic compounds such as terpenes also play an important role. Hemp, on the other hand, contains practically zero active substances. It is primarily used for its fibres and to produce seeds, both of which are industrial materials that form the basis of a huge range of products, including hemp plastic.

Thanks to the efforts of Sensi Seeds’ subsidiary HempFlax, the production of industrial hemp is on the rise and that’s fantastic news! As such, we are incredibly pleased with the arrival of these hemp entrepreneurs, their physical plea against plastics made from fossil sources and hemp plastic, an environmentally-friendly alternative. In the words of the late Jack Herer, “hemp can save the world,” and this initiative is bringing the future one step closer.

Hello Mandyjane, thank you for your comment

Sensi Seeds is not directly connected with the companies mentioned in this article, it is just a report on their appearance at Expogrow. However, if you google 'gagatrading netherlands', you should easily be able to find contact details for them.

With best wishes,

Scarlet
