“Irrational Drug Laws are hindering medical research” – that is Prof. David Nutt’s statement. How exactly laws are doing that, he explains in a presentation at the Breaking Convention 2015, a biennial interdisciplinary British conference on psychedelic consciousness. Watch his speech here.

In his talk, Prof. Nutt explains the damaging role that irrational laws such as those voted by UN conventions have had on research. He also demonstrates how these laws have resulted in the worst censorship of research in the history of science. The problem is getting worse in the UK and in many other countries, according to him, and he claims that “the lost opportunities in terms of neuroscience and psychiatry are profound and we need to rectify the situation urgently.”

Since his presentation took place, the British government has actually debated about cannabis due to public pressure and after nearly a quarter of a million signatures were gathered, but by no means does this change the message nor actuality of Mr. Nutt’s speech.
