The cannabis revolution is unfolding worldwide. An increasing amount of nations are starting to realize that the war on cannabis is pointless. Strangely, the once most cannabis-tolerant country on the face of the Earth, is going the other way. We are talking about the Netherlands.

One of the victims of the Dutch war on cannabis is Johan van Laarhoven, a retired coffeeshop entrepreneur living in Thailand. The Dutch government accuses him of laundering money earned by selling cannabis in the Netherlands, and of investing the resulting funds in his new home country. The Dutch public prosecutors also triggered the Thai authorities to investigate Johan van Laarhoven, leading to his, and his wife’s, imprisonment under horrific conditions for the last 13 months.

However, Dutch coffeeshops are tolerated to sell cannabis under specific conditions. Only purchasing their stock remains illegal, therefore forcing coffeeshops to operate in a gray area. So is Van Laarhoven really to blame?

Because the Thai authorities have no idea about the situation in The Netherlands and the Dutch way of dealing with cannabis, a Thai delegation was invited over to Holland to have a good look at the local approach.
