In the world of cannabis, the word “sour” carries heavy weight. Not only does it refer to a distinct aroma and flavour profile, but it also connotes ties to very specific (and highly sought-after) genetics.

So, besides their tangy aromas and flavours, what are sour strains? What genetics do they share, and where did they come from? Learn all of this (and more) in our deep-dive into the world of sour weed.

Sour Diesel: The mother of all sour strains?

There’s no way we could talk about sour weed strains without mentioning the famous Sour Diesel.

Born in the 1990s in New York, Sour Diesel is like the OG Kush of the US East Coast. To this day, it’s beloved by smokers everywhere: from the average joe to celebrities like Wiz Khalifa. And if you get your hands on a batch of it, you’ll know exactly why from the minute you pop the lid on your stash.

With fluffy, bright green buds that stink of fuel, citrus, pine, and skunk, Sour Diesel doesn’t sneak into a room: she kicks down the front door and makes her presence known instantly. In fact, she might well have been one of the earliest strains to be tagged as smelling “loud.”

Beyond her characteristic aroma, Sour Diesel packs equally intense flavours and an electrifying high. Light her up, inhale, and enjoy an immediate cerebral lift that’s perfect for social settings, creativity, or elevating pretty much any activity: from a walk around the block to a night out on the town.

Sour Diesel genetics: A cross of Chem x Super Skunk?

Wondering where Sour Diesel got her top-shelf traits? You’re not alone. From the minute Sour D hit the streets in the 1990s, the cannabis community was captivated and wanted to know more. For decades, however, Sour Diesel’s origins were shrouded in mystery, linked only to the moniker Asshole Joe.

Luckily, the mysterious veil around Sour Diesel and her origins has finally been lifted: Circa 2024, Joe Murray (now known as AJ Sour Diesel) stepped into the spotlight and claimed his fame for bringing Sour Diesel to the masses.

The power of a good name

In 1992/1993, AJ started scoring top-shelf weed from his plug, The Weasel. From the minute he sold his first bag, that was it: the people of New York couldn’t get enough of the bud’s intense stank and electrifying buzz. And no wonder: the strain AJ was getting was the infamous Chemdawg 91, which The Weasel scored directly from its creator, Greg Krzanowski.

There was just one problem: to AJ and his partner, the name Chemdawg simply didn’t cut it. And to understand why, we need to travel back in time (at least in our minds) to the 1990s, a time when the difference between good weed and mids wasn’t just noticeable: it was absolutely abysmal.

Remember, we’re quite spoilt to be living in an era where even mediocre cannabis is actually pretty decent. Whether you’re lucky enough to buy from a licensed cannabis retailer like a dispensary or still need to rely on unsolicited channels, getting a fire smoke today isn’t so hard.

In the 90s, however, that wasn’t the case, so when something as good as Chemdawg popped around, smokers took notice and maybe even got a little suspicious. Hence, AJ changed Chemdawg’s name to The Diesel to avoid suspicions that what he was selling was laced or chemically altered.

The Amsterdam connection

When he wasn’t hustling on the streets of NYC, AJ decided to spend time in Amsterdam: a place where he could enjoy the summer, smoke great weed, live cheaply, and escape the “tough on crime” policies of New York’s Giuliani administration. Little did he know that he was planting the seeds for New York’s next big cash crop.

On one of his trips to Amsterdam, AJ shipped a small batch of Silver Pearl (a 5-way sativa cross and one of Sensi Seeds’ earliest creations) back to New York. Upon returning, he met up with The Weasel and showed him The Pearl. Blown away by its unique nose and potency, The Weasel flew to Amsterdam a few days later and returned with a bunch of seeds that would lay down the genetic foundations for the almighty Sour Diesel.

Those seeds were 4 Sensi Seeds originals, namely NL #5, Hawaiian Indica, Super Skunk, and Early Pearl, as well as Oasis (rumoured to stem from the rare Northern Lights II).

The birth of a legend

After his trip to The Netherlands, The Weasel started growing a variety of Dutch genetics and shipping his harvests to AJ and his partners to sell. Suddenly, AJ and his crew went from slinging a single standout crop (namely The Diesel) to having a constantly rotating menu of fire to offer their clientele.

However, The Diesel was still hot on the lips of New York smokers and constantly on AJ’s menu. Then, one day, everything changed: for the first time ever, the bags of Diesel AJ got from The Weasel contained seeds. And he didn’t waste a second to jump on this opportunity.

AJ and his crew grew out the only 3 seeds they got in their delivery, aptly naming the resulting plants Diesel #1, #2 and #3. Eventually, one of the plants produced more seeds, among which AJ found the standout pheno that he dubbed “The Sour.”

From roughly 1997 until 2012, AJ consistently grew and sold The Sour before disappearing under the radar. Then, in 2024, he stepped out into the spotlight, embracing New York’s new laws to launch the AJ Sour Diesel cannabis brand.

Diesel & beyond: The 7 best sour weed strains

Akin to White Widow, Cookies, or Kandiz, Sour Diesel did much more than just birth a new generation of strains: it revolutionised what cannabis could smell, taste, and feel like.

With a pungent nose that seems to almost clear the sinuses with its bright, citrus-diesel kick and an energising cerebral rush, The D is like no other strain on the market. And as it become more popular (propelled forward by its exceptional traits but also the changing legal landscape in the US), growers and breeders from across the globe jumped at the opportunity to experiment with its genetics.

And so, a whole new “family” of sour strains was born. Some of its standout members include:

1. Sour Amnesia

Combining genetics from opposite sides of the world, Sour Amnesia (Sour Diesel x Amnesia) is a delight to smoke. It delivers a mix of diesel and floral amnesia terps in every toke, as well as a soaring cerebral high ideal for daytime use.

2. Purple Pickle Automatic

Our Purple Pickle combines original Sour Diesel x GDP into a 60% indica-dominant auto with dark, frosty flowers, diesel overtones, and notes of sweet berries, grapes, and earthy citrus. Her effects hit immediately, providing a rush of creative energy that gradually mellows down into a soothing body buzz.

3. Sour OG/Sour Kush

A clash of American titans, Sour Diesel x OG Kush created 2 incredible hybrids: Sour Kush and Sour OG. They both produce dense, round, and frosty buds boasting not only great Kush structure, but also notes of earth and pine that perfectly round out Sour Diesel’s pungent, gassy bite. A great second stop for anyone looking to go beyond regular diesel.

4. Gorillaz Automatic

Born from a collab between Sensi Seeds and Fat Beans, Gorillaz Auto combines Chemdawg x Sour Diesel x Chocolope into a true flavour bomb with an exotic blend of old and new-school flavours. Enjoy notes of spicy hashish and sandalwood mixed with a fresh burst of diesel and a creative care-free buzz.

5. Sour Apple

Looking for a fruitier take on Sour Diesel? Sour Apple combines Diesel and Cinderella 99 into a balanced hybrid with much tamer aromas/flavours and a mellow buzz. Ideal for anyone chasing a more grounded experience than that provided by Sour Diesel.

6. Pumpkin Spice

Combining Sour Apple x Animal Cookies, Pumpkin Spice produces long, wispy sativa flowers with an earthy base, fruity overtones, and a delicious spicy kick. Its effects elevate the mind within minutes of your first toke, then wash over the body to induce waves of mellow relaxation.

7. Headband

Also known just as HB, this is another cross of Sour Diesel and OG Kush. This time, the mix created a unique creamy aroma and flavour profile, as well as a relaxing cerebral buzz that’s perfect for whenever you want to unwind.

Lesser-known (but by no means inferior) descendants of Sour Diesel also include:

  • Sour Maui (Sour Diesel x Maui Wowie)
  • Sour Haze (Sour Diesel x Haze)
  • Sage and Sour (Sour Diesel x SAGE)
  • Sour Banana Sherbet (Sour Diesel x Banana Sherbet)

  1. Sour strains are cannabis varieties known for their sharp, tangy, fuel-like aroma—largely traced back to Sour Diesel, a 1990s New York legend. Its genetics likely stem from Chemdawg and Super Skunk, though its exact origins were long debated. Growers later used it to breed new hybrids, creating a whole “sour” family. Popular examples include Sour Amnesia, Sour OG, Headband, and Sour Apple, each blending diesel notes with fruity, earthy, or creamy flavors. Overall, Sour Diesel reshaped cannabis taste and potency trends.
