Thought Moon Rocks were potent? Wait until you try Sun Rocks. Combining top-shelf flower, concentrate, and even cannabinoid isolates all from the same strain, they’re the crème de la crème of cannabis caviar.

What are Sun Rocks?

Sun Rocks (sometimes also written as “sunrocks”) are what some users call cannabis caviar: a type of high-end cannabis that elevates regular flower by combining it with other weed products (such as concentrates or isolates). Another popular form of cannabis caviar are Moon Rocks, which we’ll also touch on in this article. Learn more about Moon Rocks here.
Sun Rocks are essentially a step up from Moon Rocks, combining top-shelf flower and concentrates, all from the same strain. They’re packed with THC and terpenes, and are not for the faint of heart. Light up a Sun Rock, and prepare for a ride that’s as flavourful as it is intense.
How potent are Sun Rocks?

Sun Rocks are the most potent form of flower currently on the market. Packing up to 80% THC, they’re almost triple the strength of regular bud and considerably stronger than Moon Rocks. In fact, Sun Rocks are on par with high-end concentrates like hash and even BHO.
What are the effects of Sun Rocks?
Combining only the best ingredients, Sun Rocks deliver strong effects that generally hit fast, hard, and last for hours. Of course, how Sun Rocks make you feel will depend on your tolerance and the properties of the particular strain your rocks are made of.
In general, however, Sun Rocks deliver a fast onset of both physical and cerebral effects. Even seasoned smokers should tread carefully when sparking up these super-charged nugs: they’re more than capable of blowing you away with a single toke!

Besides being extra potent, Sun Rocks are also extremely flavourful. Unlike Moon Rocks, Sun Rocks are made using flower and extracts derived from exactly the same strain. Light up a Sour Diesel Sun Rock, therefore, and you can expect an explosion of classic diesel, citrus, and skunk aromas – far beyond what you’d get when smoking just regular Sour Diesel weed.
If you’re passionate about the flavours and aromas of a particular strain, Sun Rocks can condense all that goodness into a single, frosty, and ultra-potent nug!
Sun Rocks vs. Moon Rocks:

Sun Rocks and Moon Rocks might look similar at a glance, but there are clear differences in their ingredients, potency, and quality:
- Moon Rocks are generally considered a lower quality product than Sun Rocks. They are typically made from mid-grade flower covered in similar grade distillate and finished with kief, which is essentially the most primitive form of hash out there. Moon Rocks can also be made of a mishmash of strains and originally clocked in at around 60% THC (though they’ve gotten more potent with time). They’re caked in concentrate and kief, and don’t really resemble regular bud.
- Sun Rocks, on the other hand, are essentially higher-grade Moon Rocks. They’re made from only select flower coated lightly in top-shelf, terp-heavy concentrate (like live rosin or terp sauce, for example) and finished with either the highest-quality kief or even THC/THCA isolate crystals. Sun Rocks can deliver up to 80% THC and aren’t as caked as Moon Rocks, preserving some of the natural appearance of regular flower. They are also made from ingredients all taken from the same strain.
How do you smoke Sun Rocks?

Smoking Sun Rocks is tricky given how sticky they are. While plenty of sources recommend sticking Sun Rocks in a grinder and rolling them in a joint or blunt, we recommend this approach instead:
- Loosely cut up your Sun Rocks using a pair of scissors. Sticking these dense, resin-coated nugs in your grinder will butcher them (and probably ruin your grinder by clogging its gears).
- Use a bong or bubbler (rather than a joint) if you like smoking. Alternatively, load your Sun Rocks into a vaporiser compatible with both dry herbs and concentrates.
- If you’re smoking Sun Rocks in a bong or bubbler, layer the bottom and top of your bowl with a sprinkling of regular flower. This will help the Sun Rocks burn better.
- Take it easy. Remember: Sun Rocks are SUPER POTENT, so much so that even Snoop Dogg says they’re too much!
Where can you buy Sun Rocks?
Sun Rocks have been very popular for several years, especially across North America, where you’ll find them available for sale at most dispensaries. In Europe, where concentrates aren’t as popular as in the US, Sun Rocks are a little more difficult to get hold of. Coffeeshops in the Netherlands or Cannabis Social Clubs in Spain, however, sometimes stock them.

If you live in an area where you can’t buy Sun Rocks from a retailer, don’t stress: making them yourself is super simple.
How to make Sun Rocks at home:
Ingredients:
- Flower
- Cannabis concentrate (from the same strain as your flower)
- THC crystals or similar high-potency extract (ideally also from the same strain as your flower)
Materials:
- A clean work surface (rolling trays work great)
- Tweezers for handling your buds
- Dab tools for handling your extracts
- A lighter and glass container to heat your concentrate

- Select your best flower. Remember, Sun Rocks are made from only the fattest, frostiest buds.
- Prepare your concentrate. Again, unlike Moon Rocks, Sun Rocks call for the highest quality dabs out there. Distillates or BHO won’t cut it; think terp sauce, live resin, or rosin instead. You may want to gently melt your concentrates to ensure they cover your flower more evenly.
- Cover your flower. Whereas Moon Rocks are usually drenched in extract, Sun Rocks call for lighter coverage. After all, you want the natural structure and colour of your buds to remain visible.
- Dust your buds with THC/THCA crystals. If you can’t get these kinds of products, use the highest quality hash or kief you have available. Again, only lightly cover your buds to preserve their natural look.
Are Sun Rocks worth it?
Despite being extra potent and hella flashy, Sun Rocks have garnered mixed opinions from smokers! While some love them, others argue that they’re overkill, and don’t allow the best traits of the flower nor the concentrates they’re made with to shine through.

If you haven’t tried them yourself, you know what to do: either score some Sun Rocks from your local cannabis retailer, or make them at home, then share your thoughts in the comments below!
