Atomic Blue Dream Feminized

Atomic Blue Dream Feminized

We’re highlighting our time with Atomic Blue Dream Feminized. This 50/50 hybrid possesses a distinctly sativa-like growth pattern with significant internodal spacing and a main cola occupying the upper half of the plant. While these can grow quite tall if left alone, we were able to keep ours at a manageable height and secured an impressive yield.

Total growing time: 88 days

Flowering time: 60 days

Final height: 112 cm

Final yield: 132 grams

THC content: 22.12%

To grow our Atomic Blue Dream Feminized cannabis seeds, we used a 1000 W Phillips GreenPower HPS light initially set to an 18/6 schedule. The seed itself was grown in an 8-litre plastic pot filled with BAC Lava Mix and topped with a thin layer of Rockwool. Throughout the grow, we kept our grow room at a regular 23°C during the day with nighttime temperatures dropping down to 21°C and a relative humidity of 65% during vegetation.

Germination & seedling

Before we could do anything, we first needed to germinate our seeds. Thankfully, this is possibly the easiest part of the entire process and requires no special equipment; all you need are some paper towels, a plate, and a plastic bag.

To start, just fold up some paper towels and put them on a plate. Next, you’ll want to sprinkle a small amount of water, maybe 20-30 ml, just so that paper towels are damp but not soaked. Now, place your seeds on top of the towels, making sure to leave a few centimetres between them. Cover all of this with another damp paper towel, put it into an open plastic bag, and set it somewhere warm for a day or so.

After about a day or so, our seed had cracked open to show off its taproot. We then took it and planted it into a pre-soaked Rockwool cube (taproot down) and put it under a 600 W lamp where it could spend a few days developing roots. At this stage, seedlings are rather fragile, and too much light, heat, or water could prevent them from rooting. After three days, we gave our seedling its first feeding with 100 ml of pH-balanced water (pH 6.2; EC 0.8) mixed with a small amount of rooting hormone.

Vegetation

At the end of the first week, our Atomic Blue Dream Feminized cannabis plant was already 12 cm tall and looking healthy. At this point, it hadn’t sprouted any true leaves, but the cotyledons were a vibrant shade of green. Now that the roots were growing out of the bottom of the Rockwool cube, it was time to transplant our seedling to its new home: an 8-litre plastic pot under our 1000 W light. This also meant that it was time to start properly feeding our plant, and we began watering with 200 ml of water (pH 6.0; EC 1.4) mixed with Bio Grow liquid nutrients.

In week two, our seedling grew somewhat slowly, gaining only 5 cm to reach a height of 17 cm. This was accompanied by the first set of true leaves, with a second set on the way. Since the plant was so tall and a little top-heavy, we added a wooden support rod to help prevent it from falling over.

Week three saw rather significant growth with our plant gaining 9 cm to reach a new height of 26 cm. This week also saw the growth of a couple of new sets of leaves with rather stretched-out internodal spacing and the first signs of lateral branches. With all of this new growth, and with flowering just around the corner, we doubled the volume of water to 400 ml per day.

Before making the switch to flowering, we hung small satchels of Neoseiulus californicus and Amblyseius swirskii from the plant’s lower branches. These little pouches contain hundreds of tiny bugs that live symbiotically with cannabis plants and cause the plants no harm. Instead, these beneficial critters feed on parasites like spider mites and thrips that can destroy a harvest if not dealt with quickly. These satchels are replaced every four weeks to guarantee a constant supply.

Flowering

In week four, we transitioned our Atomic Blue Dream plant to flowering by switching our lights to a 12/12 schedule and swapping to daily feedings of 800 ml of pH-balanced water (pH 6.0; EC 1.8) mixed with Bio Flower liquid nutrients.

This week saw our plant shoot up to a new height of 39 cm, and this vertical growth was paired with fairly robust growth of lateral branches. The plant had fairly long internodal spacing and broad, heavy leaves. With all of this new growth, we lowered the humidity of our grow room to 60% to help prevent mould.

In week five, our plant saw its largest growth spurt, shooting up 19 cm to a height of 58 cm. Almost all of the growth this week was in the main stem, and the lateral branches were still quite short. However, the internodal spacing along the branches and main stem was stretching rapidly, and the entire plant was taking on a tall, cylindrical look. To make sure our plant had everything it needed to support all of this new growth, we increased the water to 1000 ml a day.

Week six saw another major growth spurt for our plant as it grew to a new height of 74 cm. This week also saw the lateral branches finally take off and grow significantly outwards, giving the plant a lanky, stretched-out, Christmas tree shape and highlighting the strain’s 50/50 hybrid genes. Over this week, our plant began to show the first signs of flowering as small clusters of white hairs appeared at the tops of branches. With full bloom set to start any time now, we increased the volume of water to 1500 ml each day.

In week seven, our plant slowed down somewhat and reached a new height of 87 cm as the main stem grew well above the lower branches. By now, each flowering site was well-established, and the flowers were developing rapidly. At this point, we further lowered the humidity to 60%.

As week eight came and went, our plant saw its last major bout of growth, climbing to an even 100 cm tall. By now, every flowering site was sporting an impressive bud, and the main cola was forming into a thing of true beauty while the lower branches were doing an admirable job of holding up their ever-growing flowers.

In week nine, our plant grew to 107 cm tall, and the main cola was now fully formed, occupying the upper half of the plant. All over the plant, the pistils had rapidly turned a deep orange, meaning that harvest was just around the corner. The higher lateral branches were still growing mostly vertically; however, the lowest ones were being pulled down slightly by the increasing weight of the buds, but no additional support was required.

Over weeks ten and eleven, the main cola continued to grow upwards, putting the plant at 110 cm tall. By now, the main cola was a true behemoth, and the lower buds were dense and sticky with resin. At this point, harvest was just around the corner.

Finally, in week twelve, we harvested our Atomic Blue Dream cannabis plant at a height of 112 cm.

Harvest

Harvesting our Atomic Blue Dream feminized cannabis plant was a breeze. To start, we cut it down at the base, trimmed off any fan leaves, and hung it upside-down in a climate-controlled space. We kept this room at a consistent 15.5°C with a relative humidity of 50% and left our plant hanging until the branches were brittle enough to snap when bent; this commonly takes 10-20 days.

After our plant was sufficiently dry, we removed the buds and trimmed off any remaining leaves. Thanks to the strain’s longer internodal spacing and relatively light vegetation, this was particularly easy, though some of the sugar leaves were fairly small, and getting all of them was a bit tricky. Once the buds were trimmed, we put them all into glass jars for curing.

For the first 24 hours, we left these jars open to let most of the remaining moisture evaporate. After being sealed, the jars were “burped” for one hour several times a day. Over the next several weeks, this frequency was slowly reduced to only once per day. After about 6 weeks of curing, our Atomic Blue Dream plant was ready to sample.

All in all, we were able to harvest an impressive 132 grams of dried flowers with an equally respectable THC content of 22.12%.

Terpene profile

As harvest approached, we began to notice our Atomic Blue Dream Feminized plant was giving off an aroma of sweet blueberry notes plucked from its Blue Dream genetics. These fruity tastes were blended with Chernobyl’s zesty lime and citrus notes, and everything blended perfectly to form a uniquely appealing and complex aroma.

After being fully cured, the buds took on a powerfully sweet aroma of blueberries and citrus, which dominated the slightly more subtle earthy and piney undertones. All of these same scents were present in the incredibly delicious taste, which gave us a refreshingly smooth inhale, followed by a sweet and tangy finish that was punctuated by an herbal spiciness, which added complexity to the sweet fruitiness.

As soon as we exhaled our first hit of Atomic Blue Dream Feminized, we were hit hard by an uplifting, euphoric mental buzz that instantly boosted our creativity, drive, and focus. Slowly, this transitioned into a more soothing relaxation that was perfect for taking the edge off without locking us to the couch. Overall, this strain makes a great choice for those times when you’ve places to be and things to do, and you need to stay focused while still taking the edge off.

The outcome

While Atomic Blue Dream Feminized is a true 50/50 split, the strain’s growth pattern and effects are distinctly sativa. If not monitored closely, these plants have the ability to grow into absolute monsters, and they may not be particularly well-suited for indoor growers with limited headroom. However, with early flowering and a bit of training, growers will find this strain to be especially rewarding come harvest time.
