We created Ghostbuzzters OG Automatic in 2024 together with Serge Cannabis, and documented a detailed test grow in this grow report. Despite its compact size, this 70% indica hybrid impressed us with sturdy branches capable of supporting dense, heavy buds, showcasing the strength of its Colorado Ghost OG and OG Kush heritage.
Flowering stage: 60 days
Total time, seed to harvest: 81 days
Final height: 59 cm
Final yield: 58 grams
THC content: 20.2%
To grow Ghostbuzzters OG Automatic, we used BAC Lava Mix and hung a Phillips 1000W Green Power HPS light 3 metres above it. During vegetation, this light is on an 18/6 schedule before going 12/12 during flowering. The ambient temperature remained constant at 23°C during the day and 21°C at night, with the humidity kept at 65% throughout the vegetative stage.
Germination & seedling
To get this girlie going, we followed the reliable paper towel method. We simply placed the seed between two damp (not dripping) paper towels on a plate and covered it loosely with plastic.
Over the first week, we kept the seedling in a Rockwool cube, positioned 80 cm below a Phillips 600W light to ensure it didn’t receive too much light too quickly.
After around 24 hours, the seed shell had cracked open to reveal the taproot. We carefully planted the seed, taproot down, into a small hole about 0.5 cm below the surface, lightly covering it with soil. Within another day, the seed had sprouted, and after a few more days, the seedling had grown its first true leaves and was standing about 10 cm tall. It was then time for the first watering, using 100 ml of water with a pH of 6.2 and an EC of 0.8. On the third day, we dosed the stem with some root stimulator.
Vegetation
Coming into the second week, the plant had nearly doubled in size and was standing at 19 cm. Despite the minor setback, the roots were developing nicely and were making their way out of the bottom of the Rockwool cube, meaning it was time to transplant. As usual, we moved our Ghostbuzzters OG Automatic seedling into an 8-litre pot and made sure to add a little extra soil, so the plant had enough soil stability to keep growing. Additionally, we placed the seedling under the 1000 W HPS light.
At this point, we doubled the amount of water during feedings to 200 ml and began mixing in low levels of Bio Grow liquid nutrients. This solution had an adjusted pH of 6.2 and an EC of 1.4. Lastly, we added satchels of Neoseiulus californicus and Amblyseius swirskii to the plant’s lower branches. These are beneficial critters that prey on pests like spider mites or thrips without causing any damage to the plant.
In the third week, our little lady kept growing, reaching a new height of 25 cm and exploded outwards with strong lateral growth. This new vegetation was a deep, healthy green and the branches and main stem were thickening nicely. To keep up with this growth, we again doubled the water to 400 ml per feeding and upped the dosage of the nutrients.
Flowering
As we made our way through the fourth week, our plant had slowed down a bit growing only 3 more centimetres. This isn’t terribly uncommon for autoflowering strains that are about to switch to flowering, so it wasn’t anything to worry about. During this week, we upped the water to 800 ml per feeding and switched to Bio Flower liquid nutrients and raised the EC to 1.7.
As this is an autoflowering strain, there was no need to switch the lighting schedule. However, we were growing photoperiod strains in the same place, so we had to cut the light down to a 12/12 schedule.
The fifth week saw fairly significant growth with our Ghostbuzzters OG Automatic plant now 33 cm tall. As the plant continued to grow, the ambient humidity of the room naturally increased. To keep the environment safe for bud formation, we lowered the humidity to 60%. Anything higher than this during flowering can cause mould to form.
During the sixth week, we increased the water to 1 litre per feeding and hung new satchels of Neoseiulus californicus and Amblyseius swirskii. This was the week when all of our work started to show results as the plant began to blossom from head to toe. These initial buds were small but dense and covered in vibrant white pistils.
Into the seventh week, the main stem hadn’t slowed down and was now standing 44 cm tall. The flowers were growing in thicker at every site and the buds at the top were slowly growing together to form the cola. The lateral branches had grown nicely and were developing healthy flowers throughout. These buds were still quite small but were growing noticeably larger every day.
The eighth week saw an explosion of development with the flowers nearly doubling in size. The cola was expanding to lower nodes and the lateral branches were covered in buds. This was the week where we placed the final satchels of predators.
The ninth week saw the plant standing at 55 cm; fairly significant growth for over a month into flowering. By now, the plant was in full bloom and was starting to give off a distinct diesel smell mixed with floral hints. At this point, the very first pistils were starting to turn a vibrant orange, signifying that the end was slowly approaching.
In the tenth week, our Ghostbuzzters OG Automatic plant had stopped growing, reaching its final height of 59 cm. The cola had largely finished forming and some of the lateral branches were struggling to support their new flowers. More and more pistils were turning orange and all that was left to do was wait another week.
By the eleventh week, the plant was ready for harvest. The pistils had almost all turned orange and trichomes covered many of the leaves. The cola was dense, and the lateral branches were covered in smaller popcorn buds. With nothing left to do, it was time to cut our baby down.
Harvest
To start the harvest, we first cut the plant down at the base and then hung it upside-down in a climate-controlled environment for the next few weeks. Maintaining a steady temperature of 15.5°C and a relative humidity level of 60%, we aimed to minimise the risk of mould or disease.
Once the smaller branches became brittle enough to snap, we trimmed the buds and transferred them into glass jars for curing. Initially, these jars were left unsealed for 24 hours to allow the bulk of the remaining moisture to evaporate. Next, we sealed the jars and “burped” them multiple times daily, each session lasting about an hour, for the first two weeks of curing. During the final four weeks, burping occurred once daily until the buds were ready to smoke.
Once everything was said and done, we were able to harvest 58 grams of dry flower. That’s really not a lot for 12 weeks of work. The weed that we did get was reasonably potent at 20.2% and had a pleasant taste and effect.
Terpene profile
Ghostbuzzters OG Automatic retains at least some influence from its sativa heritage. After using this strain, the first thing we noticed was a euphoric blast-off accompanied by a clear, cerebral high. This slowly gave way to a nice mental clarity alongside a relaxed body high. Overall, a very well-rounded experience.
The strain’s distinctive (and powerful) diesel smell is present in both the finished flowers and during growth, meaning that you’ll need to invest in some proper carbon filters to contain the smell. After harvesting and curing, diesel gas notes dominate, complemented by zesty citrus scents with hints of sandalwood and pine.
The outcome
Our Ghostbuzzters OG Automatic remained incredibly short, even for an autoflowering indica. This, combined with its fairly quick flowering time, makes it a great choice for growers with limited space and/or time. However, this combination also means that your harvests won’t be fantastic. This is a strain for those prioritising speed over production.
However, the final product is a fantastic mellow high that is a great choice for anyone looking to combine weed with something a bit more active. If you’ve already got a grow space and want to try this strain out, it won’t get in the way and can make a nice mid-grow harvest alongside larger or slower plants.
