For this report, we grew Sensi Amnesia XXL Automatic; a 70% sativa hybrid known for its relatively fast flowering time and impressive yields. A unique blend of classic Amnesia that has been back-crossed with itself with a dash of ruderalis to give it the autoflowering trait, this plant grew quickly and provided a bountiful harvest without getting too tall.
Total growing time: 98 days
Flowering time: 70 days
Final height: 101 cm
Final yield: 112 grams
THC content: 24.7%
As with all of our grows, we grew our Sensi Amnesia XXL Automatic in an 8-litre pot filled with BAC Lava mix under a 1000 W Philips GreenPower HPS lamp on an 18/6 schedule. The daytime temperature of the room was kept at a consistent 23°C dropping down to 21°C at night and the space was kept at a relative humidity of around 65% during vegetation.
Germination & seedling
To ensure that our Sensi Amnesia XXL seed got off to the best possible start, we germinated it using the tried-and-tested paper towel method. This is the easiest, fastest, and most reliable way to ensure that seeds properly germinate and requires zero additional equipment.
Simply place a slightly damp paper towel onto a plate, drop the seed on top, and cover it with another damp paper towel. Place this entire setup loosely underneath (or inside of) a plastic bag and set it in a warm area. After a day or so, you’ll notice the seed has cracked open.
After a day, our seed had germinated exposing the taproot. This was then planted into a Rockwool cube (taproot down) and then placed under a 600 W LED light. At this stage, the seedling is incredibly delicate and too much light can cause damage. After another day or so, the plant sprouted and after three days it was time for the first feeding—100 ml of pH-balanced water (Ph 6.0; EC 0.8) and a small dose of rooting hormone.
By the end of week one, our plant was 4 cm tall and the cotyledons were a vibrant shade of green. While there were no true leaves yet, things were off to a fantastic start.
Vegetation
During week two, our little lady sprouted her very first true leaves and it was time to move her to her new home under the 1000 W light. At this point, it was time to start feeding her properly and we began with daily waterings of 200 ml of water (pH 6.0; EC 1.4) mixed with Bio Grow liquid nutrients. By the end of the week, our plant had grown slightly to a new height of 6.5 cm and had developed its first true set of leaves.
Week three saw significant growth with the plant growing to 11 cm and developing multiple new sets of leaves with relatively short internodal spacing. During this week, we increased the water volume to 400 ml daily and we hung small satchels of Neoseiulus californicus and Amblyseius swirskii from the lower branches. Each of these packages contains hundreds of tiny predatory mites that feed on parasites like thrips and spider mites without harming the plant. These are replaced every four weeks to ensure a fresh supply.
In week four, our Sensi Amnesia XXL plant had a major growth spurt more than doubling in size to a new height of 29 cm. She grew multiple sets of new leaves and the vegetation was dense and bushy highlighting the strain’s indica genetics. Seeing this sudden growth meant that we needed to once again up the amount of water to 800 ml daily.
Flowering
By week five, it was time to switch our plant to flowering. Doing so was simple as we just needed to swap to a 12/12 lighting schedule. Technically, as an autoflowering strain, there’s no need to switch lights but this plant was being grown alongside photoperiod strains. Additionally, we began watering with 1000 ml of water (pH 6.0; EC 1.8) each day and switched to Bio Flower liquid nutrients. By the end of the week, our Sensi Amnesia XXL plant was 47 cm tall and more than ready to blossom.
Week six saw incredible growth with our plant growing nearly 30 cm to a new height of 76 cm. This kind of stretch is common early in flowering and can continue for several weeks. Luckily, things would slow down considerably over the next 2 weeks. To keep up with this explosive growth, we upped to water to 1500 ml each day.
By the end of week seven, our budding beauty was in full bloom with the very first small clumps of white pistils appearing at the tips of branches and a few inner nodes. She also grew another 20 cm to a new height of 96 cm. At this point, the lateral branches were fairly even with the main cola and a nice canopy was forming, The internodal spacing was moderate and the vegetation in the lower branches was increasingly dense.
Over week eight, the vertical growth slowed nearly to a halt and our plant was now standing at exactly 100 cm in height. This is about the time that most photoperiod strains slow their vertical growth as they shift to a focus on flowering so this was a welcome sign. At this point, the flowers were still quite small and lacked any real density, but that was all about to change.
As we made our way through week ten, our Sensi Amnesia XXL plant saw only 1 cm of vertical growth reaching her final height of 101 cm. However, this was accompanied by explosive growth among the flowers with existing buds growing larger and new sites developing almost daily. These buds were covered in white—nearly silver—hairs and the sugar leaves were beginning to develop a nice coating of trichomes.
Week eleven was largely more of the same. There was no new vertical growth but the buds were exploding. Growing larger and denser each day, the flowers were beginning to give a distinctly sweet and citrusy aroma. The smell was quite powerful and indoor growers should take care to mitigate the aroma.
Week twelve came and went with no issues. A few pistils were starting to turn orange and there was nothing left to do at this point but wait a few more weeks for things to finish up on their own. You can’t rush nature.
By the end of week thirteen, the flowers on the lateral branches were so dense that they required additional support. More and more hairs had turned orange and harvest was rapidly approaching. The final shape of the plant was incredibly bushy with the lateral branches being only slightly shorter than the main stalk. While this strain may only be 30% indica, its growth pattern is classic sativa.
Finally, in week fourteen, it was time to harvest our Sensi Amnesia XXL Automatic.
Harvest
Harvesting our Sensi Amnesia XXL Automatic was straightforward. We started by cutting the plant at its base, removing the fan leaves, and hanging it upside down in a room kept at 15.5°C with around 50% humidity. After about two weeks, the branches were dry enough to snap when bent, indicating it was time to trim the buds.
After trimming, we placed the flowers into glass jars, initially leaving them open for 24 hours. Once most of the moisture had evaporated, we closed the jars and “burped” them several times a day for about an hour each time. Over the next few weeks, we gradually reduced the burping frequency to once a day until the flowers achieved the desired consistency.
After several weeks of curing, we ended up with an impressive 112 grams of dried flower with an equally laudable 24.7% THC.
Terpene profile
While growing, the smell of Sensi Amnesia XXL Automatic is pleasant but potent. A noticeable floral aroma takes center stage but potent hints of sweet and sour citrus poke through. As mentioned, if you value discretion, be sure to invest in some good odour control. Once dried, the smell of the buds is exactly what you’d expect; citrusy with pungent sour undertones. The taste, though, is much sweeter and fruitier.
The first thing we noticed after sampling these buds was an uplifting cerebral high that highlighted the strain’s sativa lineage. This powerful and cheerful feeling was soon accompanied by a sense of lightness and calm energy.
One thing we noticed about this strain was the length of the high. The effects lingered for several hours after use, so clear your afternoon before settling down with some of this.
The outcome
Overall, Sensi Amnesia XXL Automatic was a true joy to grow. Incredibly compact but a little slow (at least compared to many other autoflowering plants) this strain provides a unique opportunity for growers who want a sativa-like high but might not have the space for a classic sativa plant.
