Aloha OG Feminized (Research)

Follow us in our grow of Aloha OG Feminized; a 70% indica bred from a cross of Girl Scout Cookies and Face-Off OG. This plant grew surprisingly tall for an indica but the results were seriously impressive with one of the largest colas we’ve ever seen. While this might be too much plant for some, those with enough space are sure to love it.

Total growing time: 97 days

Flowering time: 63 days

Final height: 137 cm

Final yield: 121 grams

THC content: 20.4%

To create the best environment for our Aloha OG Feminized seed, we grew it under a 1000 W Philips GreenPower HPS light set on an 18/6 schedule. Down below, we placed our seed in an 8-litre plastic pot filled with BAC Lava Mix and covered in a thin layer of Rockwool. The grow space was kept at a consistent 23°C during “daylight” hours and 21°C at “night” with a relative humidity of 65% during vegetation.

Germination & seedling

To prepare our Aloha OG plant for her journey, we first needed to germinate the seed. Germinating cannabis seeds is incredibly easy and we used the reliable paper towel method. Just place a slightly damp paper towel onto a plate and sprinkle your seeds on top of it making sure that there are at least a few centimetres between them. Next, cover them with another damp paper towel, loosely place the whole thing inside an open plastic bag, and wait about 24-36 hours.

After a day or so, our seed cracked open, exposing the taproot. As soon as it was ready, we planted this seed (taproot down) into a Rockwool cube and placed it under a 600 W lamp. This early on, seedlings are very delicate and too much light, heat, or water can cause permanent harm. After three days, we gave our seedling her first watering with 100 ml of pH-balanced water (pH 6.2; EC 0.8) mixed with a small amount of rooting hormone poured lightly around the base.

At the end of the first week, our plant was off to a good start and was standing 6.5 cm tall. No true leaves had developed yet, but the cotyledons were thick and a healthy shade of dark green. As we wrapped up this week, it was time to move our Aloha OG to her new home; an 8-litre plastic pot under our 1000 W lamp.

Vegetation

As we made our way through week two, our plant was growing steadily and reached 10.5 cm. During this week, we began feeding with 200 ml of water (pH 6.0; EC 1.4) mixed with Bio Grow liquid nutrients each day. By the end of the week, she had grown her first set of true leaves with another set already sprouting. These leaves were a little crinkly and had a somewhat deformed appearance. This can happen sometimes and isn’t a cause for concern as it should fix itself in the next few weeks.

By the end of the third week, our little lady had more than doubled in height to reach 22 cm. To keep up with this explosive growth, we doubled the amount of water to 400 ml each day. Over the week, our plant grew several new sets of leaves and the slight deformation of the earlier leaves was slowly disappearing.

During this week we also hung small sachets of Neoseiulus californicus and Amblyseius swirskii from the plant’s lower branches. These little white pouches are filled with small predatory mites that thrive on cannabis plants without causing any damage. Instead, these critters hunt down parasites like spider mites and thrips that can destroy even the healthiest plant. These satchels are replaced every four weeks to ensure a constant supply.

Week four saw a massive growth spurt with our lovely girl more than doubling in size to a new height of 52 cm. Knowing how much this strain likes to stretch during flowering (it can easily double in height), we knew that this would be the plant’s last week of vegetation. Once again, we doubled the volume of water to 800 ml per day. Lastly, we reduced the humidity to 60%.

Flowering

As we entered the fifth week of our Aloha OG grow, things were going swimmingly. Over the week, our plant exploded with vertical growth climbing to 74 cm and sprouting several new sets of leaves. By now, the deformation on the earliest leaves was completely gone and all new leaves were perfectly healthy.

At the beginning of this week, we slipped over to flowering. All this entailed was to switch the lights to a 12-hours-on-12-hours-off schedule and swap over to Bio Flower liquid nutrients. We began watering with 1000 ml (pH 6.0; EC 1.8) each day.

Week six saw yet another burst of growth putting our blossoming beauty at 92 cm tall. By the end of the week, our plant was sprouting white pistils from the tops of branches and inner nodes showing that flowering was just about to start. At this point, the plant was covered in lush vegetation with thin, spindly leaves growing from top to bottom. At this point, we increased the water to 1500 ml per day. This would not change for the rest of the grow.

As week seven came and went, our Aloha OG saw the second-largest growth spurt of the entire grow climbing another 25 cm to a new height of 117 cm. By now, the main stalk had grown well above the rest of the canopy giving the plant a distinct Christmas tree shape so common to many indicas. All along the plant, the pistils were growing exponentially and flowers were sprouting all over the plant.

Over the eighth week, the vertical growth slowed down and our plant was standing 127 cm at the end of the week. By now, the main stem was starting to droop a bit and would need support throughout the remainder of the grow. Likewise, the lateral branches were spreading out nicely and buds were growing larger at every flowering point.

Week nine saw almost no new vertical growth with our lady reaching a height of 130 cm. Honestly, this was good news as this thing was starting to get a little out of hand. The flowers were growing larger each day, though they were still lacking any real density.

In week ten, our plant grew another 3 cm to a new height of 133 cm and we reduced the humidity to 55%. The lateral branches were beginning to bend slightly under the weight of the rapidly growing buds which were becoming noticeably larger with each passing day.

In week eleven, our Aloha OG plant reached her maximum height of 137 cm. By now, every flowering site held a large, dense nug. The main cola was shaping up to be an absolute monster and a few pistils were slowly turning orange. At this point, harvest was only a couple of weeks away and there was nothing left to do but wait.

Week twelve saw the buds grow even denser to the point of being incredibly hard when squeezed. The smell coming off of the plant was an unmistakable blend of earthy musk with a hint of sweet berry. If you’re growing indoors, be sure to take extra steps to combat the smell. By now, more and more pistils were changing colour and harvest was just around the corner.

Week thirteen was all about letting the plant ripen up a bit before harvest. The main cola on this thing was one of the largest that we’ve ever seen and we were all beyond excited to get this lady ready for her big debut.

Harvest

Harvesting our Aloha OG Feminized was relatively straightforward. To start, we simply cut the plant down at the base, trimmed off all of the fan leaves, and hung it upside-down in a climate-controlled room (15.5°C; 50% humidity) for about 2 weeks until the small branches were dry enough to snap when bent.

Once the plant was dry enough, we needed to trim up the buds. That was something of a chore with this plant as the long, thin leaves required a bit more care than some other strains. Additionally, the sheer size of the cola and other buds made them a little difficult to work with.

Once everything was trimmed up, the buds were put into glass jars and left open for the next 24 hours. After the bulk of the remaining moisture had evaporated, the jars were sealed and “burped” several times a day for an hour at a time. The frequency of burping was gradually reduced over the next several weeks to only once per day.

Once all was said and done, we were able to harvest a genuinely impressive 121 grams of dry flower with a THC content of 20.4%.

Terpene profile

Once our Aloha OG Feminized was ready to try, we rolled one up to see just how tasty this stuff was. The first thing we noticed was the taste; earthy and musky notes that merged into a distinctly skunky flavour all hiding subtle notes of creamy fruit, The smoke was incredibly smooth and left a lingering taste in our mouths.

When it comes to the effects, this strain’s 70% indica lineage is on full display. While the high starts off with a mild cerebral boost from the plant’s sativa heritage, this quickly gives way to a deeply relaxing body high that will have the say’s stresses melting away.

The outcome

Aloha OG Feminized was an overall joy to grow. Watching as the massive buds grew denser with each passing day was incredibly rewarding and the high-quality weed was the icing on the cake. If you’ve got enough vertical space to work with, this strain is an incredible choice. For growers with limited headroom, this strain is also an incredible candidate for a screen of green or mainlining project.
