Reefer Madness in Dutch Parliament

Legal For 40 years, the government has been turning a blind eye regarding how cannabis is supplied to the famous Dutch coffeeshops – until this week!

Reefer Madness in Dutch Parliament

A majority of MPs now seem likely to back a draft legislation from the Dutch Liberal Democratic Party. The new law could potentially regulate the cultivation of cannabis to supply coffeeshops. But as expected, there seems to be a bit of a “Reefer Madness” mood around the proceedings.

The so-called “backdoor problem” is the biggest paradox of the Dutch cannabis policy: coffeeshops are allowed to sell cannabis under strict conditions, but wholesale buying, production, and cultivation are strictly prohibited.

The bill will remove the grey area between illegal cultivation and licensed cannabis sale and will also introduce quality controls.

The main opposition comes from the far right as well as from Christian parties. The latter seem to have a strong belief that cannabis is the Devil’s drug. Reefer Madness indeed!

The final debate was held on February 14th.

I believe that one should be able to cultivate the hemp and marijuana plant for their own consumption.
Maybe limit 3-5 plants per individual.

If we want to take a big step in quality, we'd have to give licenses to many companies. We'd have to control the companies very well and make sure there will only be perfectly clean products on the market. Only then the weed will get better suitable for everyones needs. Both medical as recreational. Let's hope the coffeeshops get the chance to grow as well. There's a lot of knowledge there.
