Cannabis seeds 101

Cannabis seeds are the genetic blueprint of your entire grow. These hardy seeds contain all the information needed to produce potent, resinous plants with predictable characteristics.

Modern weed seeds come in three main types:

1. Regular seeds: producing both male and female plants. These are ideal for cost-effectiveness, creating new strains, and staying true to nature.
2. Feminized seeds: producing only female plants. These are perfect for maximum bud production, with no need to remove males for growers who prefer to avoid pollination.
3. Autoflowering seeds: producing only female plants that flower automatically. They don't rely on changing seasons or light schedules. Ideal for low-effort grows or outdoor cultivation in colder climates. On average, autoflowering plants stay smaller (which can be an advantage) and yield slightly less.

Cannabis cultivation guidelines

1. Choosing your seeds

   Your growing environment and experience level matter when selecting weed seeds. Most growers often prefer feminized or autoflowering varieties for space efficiency and guaranteed female plants. Breeders, advanced growers, or growers on a budget may choose regular seeds.

2. Germination essentials

   Cannabis seeds germinate best in warm, moist conditions (20-25°C). Most weed seeds will sprout within 3-7 days when using the paper towel method. Maintain gentle lighting and consistent moisture during the crucial first weeks of growth.

3. Growing environment

   Provide your cannabis plants with adequate lighting (18+ hours for vegetative growth), proper ventilation, and appropriate nutrients. Indoor grows require quality grow lights and climate control, whilst outdoor cultivation depends on suitable climate and growing seasons.

4. Flowering and harvest

   Most cannabis strains flower for 7-14 weeks, with indica-dominant varieties typically finishing faster and sativa-dominant strains often requiring longer. Feminized and regular weed plants remain in vegetative growth until you switch the light cycle to 12/12 (or, outdoors, when the seasons change), giving you more control over plant size and timing. Autoflowering strains automatically begin flowering after 3-4 weeks of growth regardless of light schedule.

   Both types have similar flowering periods once flowering starts, but autoflowers' fixed vegetative period means they can be ready for harvest in as little as 10 weeks from seed. Monitor trichome development with a magnifying glass and harvest when most trichomes have turned from clear to milky with some amber, which indicates peak potency and effect.

5. Seed storage

   Properly stored cannabis seeds remain viable for several years. Keep weed seeds in a cool, dark, dry environment (4-7°C) to preserve their genetics. Avoid temperature fluctuations and moisture, which reduce germination rates.
