Sensi Seeds Breeding Grounds: Where the World’s Best Breeders Come Together

Breeding, growing, and smoking cannabis were never meant to be solitary endeavours. Joints were meant to be passed, and the best genetics were meant to be shared, not locked away in secret. Sensi Seeds’ Breeding Grounds lives true to the social nature of cannabis, bringing together the world’s best breeders to create new genetics for growers everywhere.

Carried across the globe as seeds hidden away in someone’s pockets, traded as clones at trade booths, or shared as finely cured flower, the history of cannabis is, at its core, a history of open hands. The instinct to share an exceptional smoke, give away a clone, or cross-pollinate your plants with another breeder’s is what defines cannabis culture.

Now, with legal frameworks in place that allow what used to be an underground movement to evolve into a budding industry, it’s more important than ever to keep the social spirit of cannabis alive. Breeding Grounds does exactly that. Built as a dedicated programme for global genetic collaboration, Breeding Grounds unites the world’s most respected cannabis breeders with Sensi Seeds’ head geneticists and extensive genetic locker.

The result is something that no one breeder could achieve in solitude: strains that carry the stability perfected in The Netherlands since the 1970s as well as the unique terpenes of cultivars recently hunted down in California, Colombia, Hawaii, Denmark, and other corners of the globe.

Though it might sound unique in today’s competitive world, this is not a new idea for Sensi Seeds. In fact, it’s inspired by the history of one of the world’s most iconic cannabis hybrids.

Jack Herer: A testament to the power of collaboration

The creation of the now-iconic Jack Herer strain was no accident, but the result of exactly the kind of inter-breeder collaboration the Sensi Seeds Breeding Grounds programme is designed to preserve.

“Before Jack existed, the top plant that we had was the Northern Lights #5 x Haze,” recalls Alan Dronkers, the eldest son of Ben Dronkers and the main breeder responsible for building and maintaining the Sensi Seeds catalogue. Alan confesses to smoking nothing but NL5 x Haze during the early 1990s until he finally began working on a new strain with Marcel (Nevil Schoenmaker’s assistant).

In 1994, the combined efforts of Alan, Ben, and Marcel were revealed at an infamous Cannabis Castle party. That night, the Jack Herer strain was born, and decades later, it remains a top pick for smokers across the globe. Besides its amazing flavour and effects, the birth of Jack Herer proves that, like joints, cannabis genetics are always better when shared!

What is Sensi Seeds Breeding Grounds?

Breeding Grounds is a programme led by Sensi Seeds that’s designed to facilitate the global collaboration of the best cannabis breeders. At its core, Breeding Grounds works like a curated incubator: a space where some of the most respected cannabis breeders come together with Sensi Seeds’ geneticists to create unique new strains using a variety of breeding stock.

Every Breeding Grounds partnership is built on mutual respect and, of course, a passion for enhancing the genetic horizons of the cannabis plant. From the seaside hills of Cauca in Colombia to the US’ sun-kissed Pacific coastline, every corner of the globe has its own climate and cannabis culture. Breeding Grounds aims to capture exactly that, all while preserving the high breeding standards that Sensi Seeds is renowned for.

How we select our partners

Sensi Seeds has spent four decades at the forefront of cannabis strain innovation. In that time, breeders have come and gone, and trends have set and faded. To earn a seat at the Breeding Grounds table, therefore, breeders need to have more than hype or a large catalogue. Some of the criteria Sensi Seeds looks for in its Breeding Grounds partners include:

  • Genuine regional cultivation expertise
  • A distinct creative identity
  • Exceptional quality standards
  • Special genetics forged by precision breeding and pheno-hunts

The list of collaborators showcased below is limited for a reason: the purpose of the Breeding Grounds isn’t simply to fill out a new catalogue. Instead, it’s about fomenting real collaborations between breeders with different schools of excellence. Sensi Seeds brings the experience of four decades stabilising award-winning cultivars, our partners the regional expertise and creative instincts honed in their own corners of the cannabis world. Every Breeding Grounds strain is the work of both teams, decided on, hunted down, and stabilised together.

How a Breeding Grounds strain is made

Collaboration and creation are at the heart of every strain in the Breeding Grounds catalogue. Long before a seed is planted, the Sensi Seeds genetics team reaches out to our partners to define the scope of our project: what growth traits to preserve, which flavour/aroma profiles to highlight, and any particular genetics either team is interested in working with.

Before the actual breeding begins, we meet with our collaborators (sometimes on numerous occasions) to review each other’s breeding stock and hunt down the filial lines that show the most promise.

From there, the growing begins: sometimes at the Sensi Seeds R&D facilities in the Netherlands, sometimes at the partner’s site in California, Colombia, Hawaii, or wherever their work is based. The location depends on the project: which climate suits the genetics, where the parent stock lives, and which team is most eager to run the grow.

Strains are crossed and plants are grown, smoked, analysed, and of course culled if they don’t match exactly what we’re looking for. Once we’ve found the plant that both teams are 100% satisfied with, the meticulous process of genetic stabilisation begins.

Using filial breeding, backcrossing, and selfing, the Breeding Grounds geneticists hone in on the best traits of a plant and bring them to the forefront. Finally, every Breeding Grounds strain is tested against Sensi Seeds’ well-established quality standards to ensure only the highest-quality seeds make it out to our customers.

Hall of fame: Meet Sensi Seeds’ Breeding Grounds partners

The breeders below were chosen for the depth of their craft and the distinct creativity of their regional strains. Combining their cultivars with the renowned stability of the Sensi Seeds catalogue produced varieties that neither breeder could generate on their own:

Humboldt Seed Company

California, USA

Standout collaboration strains:

Founded in 2001 by biologist Nathaniel Pennington and environmental scientist Benjamin Lind, the name Humboldt Seed Company has become synonymous with top-tier Californian genetics.

Though Nathaniel and Benjamin started their company breeding only for Prop. 215 patients, Humboldt Seed Company is now recognised as California’s largest licensed seed provider. The company is particularly focused on running extensive pheno-hunts to track down particular growth traits and, of course, the delicious flavours that Cali bud is renowned for.

Humboldt Seed Company was one of the first breeders to join the Breeding Grounds in 2023. Ever since, the Sensi Seeds x Humboldt Seed Company collab has produced 12 stellar autoflowering and feminized strains. Check them out here.

Aficionado French Connection

Emerald Triangle, USA / Colombia / Canada

Standout collaboration strains:

Aficionado French Connection represents the boutique end of the breeding spectrum, producing luxurious strains in strictly small numbers. The brand is led by Leo Stone: a legacy grower from Humboldt County with 44 cannabis awards to his name, and Professor Q: an expert horticulturalist with 15 years of experience growing across France, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Colombia, and the US.

Brought together by a love for Skunk and a famous mutual friend (Frenchy Cannoli), Leo and Professor Q founded Aficionado French Connection in 2018. With facilities in Los Angeles, Colombia, and Canada, the two specialise in feminized seed production and hunting down bold, boutique flavours. The chance to collaborate with Sensi Seeds, for both Leo and Professor Q, is almost a dream come true.

“I’ve always felt like we’re the underdogs of cannabis, and we were totally cool with that,” says Leo Stone. “So, to get a call to collab with Sensi is like being a freelance F1 driver and getting called by Ferrari!”

After a year of sharing and growing out seed stock at facilities in Europe and Colombia, the Sensi Seeds x Aficionado French Connection birthed 10 unique strains with exotic flavour profiles. Check out the full range here!

Fat Beans

Copenhagen, Denmark

Standout collaboration strains:

Fat Beans is Denmark’s leading seedbank and the producer of a wide variety of cup-winning cultivars. Led by Cutter Merhi, a legacy grower and central figure in Denmark’s underground cannabis scene, Fat Beans is now a registered producer of Danish cannabis seeds, offering provenance and traceability on all its strains. Nonetheless, collaborating with Sensi Seeds meant a significant step forward in Merhi’s career.

“I vividly remember the Sensi Seeds logo from my childhood trips to Amsterdam with my family. As a child, I also saw the logo at my uncle’s house in Kuwait, my cousin’s farm in Lebanon, and my father’s drawers in Copenhagen,” he said when we spoke about our collaboration. “For Fat Beans, it represents a remarkable chance to grow and learn from the best in the business.”

Another OG from the first Breeding Grounds collaborations launched in 2023, the joint venture of Sensi Seeds x Fat Beans has produced 17 feminized and automatic strains. View them all here.

Serge Cannabis

Los Angeles, California, USA

Standout collaboration strains:

Serge Damirjian has been a primary figure in the Los Angeles cannabis community for over a decade. His cultivation experience dates back to when he was roughly 14 and found a seed in one of his buds, while his professional career began when he started working as a grow room technician around San Diego.

In 2018, Serge was propelled to the California cannabis elite after setting up a cultivation and breeding facility for Cookies that later birthed strains like Gary Payton, Cereal Milk, London Pound Cake, and Georgia Pie.

In 2020, Serge jumped at the opportunity to launch his own genetics brand. First, he created Fiore, then Serge Cannabis: two brands equally committed to continuing to add stellar strains to the cannabis gene pool. In 2024, when approached by Sensi Seeds, he was honoured to expand a catalogue he was already very familiar with.

“This collaboration merges the time-honoured expertise of a legend with the innovative vision of a young breeder, sparking a new era of botanical excellence,” Serge said. Born in 2024, the Sensi Seeds x Serge Cannabis collaboration comprises 12 unique strains with both traditional and contemporary traits. Check them out here.

Death Row Records

Los Angeles, California, USA

Standout collaboration strains:

Few names in the world of cannabis culture carry the weight of Death Row Records. Founded in 1991 by hip-hop legends Suge Knight, Dr. Dre, and The D.O.C., Death Row brought West Coast gangsta rap onto the world stage. Snoop Dogg bought the label in 2022 and, unsurprisingly, aligned it with his lifelong passion for weed. Assigned as the brand’s new head geneticist was none other than Cali legend AK.

Central to the Los Angeles cannabis scene, AK has worked with local LA breeders like Wizard Trees, Doja Pak, and Cookies and played a key role in hunting down distinct Rainbow Sherbet phenotypes. Fast forward to today, and he is charged with “unboofing” celebrity cannabis by building a Snoop-approved cannabis strain catalogue for Death Row Records.

“I feel very blessed to have the opportunity to bring two of the most legendary groups in music and cannabis together,” AK says. Launched in 2026, the Sensi Seeds x Death Row Record’s Breeding Grounds programme has produced amazing strains with bold US terps. Browse them all here.

Sherbinskis

San Francisco, California, USA

Standout collaboration strains:

Sherbinskis built its world-renowned reputation with the creation of two of the most influential cannabis strains of the modern era: Gelato and Sunset Sherbet. Fruity, creamy, and sweet, these strains revitalised the palate of modern smokers and, for many, are perfect examples of how Californian cannabis should look, smell, and taste.

The combination of Sherbinskis’ modern flavours with Sensi Seeds’ diverse line of legacy genetics has birthed 15 brand-new strains. Add them to your collection here.

Ziplock Seeds

Oregon, California / Maui, Hawaii, USA

Standout collaboration strains:

Ziplock Seeds is a family-owned and run cannabis breeding company based in Oregon and Hawaii. Founder Shanoah Stanley learned the craft of growing and breeding weed from his father, who himself created the legendary Willy’s Wonder. Working in the tropical conditions of the Hawaiian archipelago, Shanoah has won over 75 cannabis awards with his unique cultivars. Still, he couldn’t be more thrilled to collaborate with Sensi Seeds.

“Working with Sensi Seeds honestly feels surreal. I’ve respected them since I was a kid flipping through seed catalogues, so being here now is a real honour,” he says. “This collaboration is growth without compromise; we get to bring our Hawaiian roots and tropical influence into these outdoor crosses, backed by a global platform that respects them rather than watering them down.”

Together, Sensi Seeds x Ziplock Seeds have created strains that combine the unique sweet, fruity terps of Hawaiian cultivars with the stability of Sensi Seeds classics. Check out the full collection here.

DNA Genetics

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Standout collaboration strains:

Born and raised in California, Don Morris and Aaron Yarkoni put it all on the line to take their cannabis careers to new heights. In 2003, the two partners left their friends and families behind to move to Amsterdam in search of a dream. And a year later, in 2004, that dream manifested: DNA Genetics opened its first seed shop in the heart of Amsterdam.

Before the year was over, Don and Aaron also claimed their first cannabis cup award: third place in the High Times Cannabis Cup Indica Category with their iconic L.A. Confidential. Ever since, the awards haven’t stopped coming, and DNA Genetics is now highly regarded as one of the world’s top breeders.

Don and Aaron couldn’t be happier with the collaboration with Sensi Seeds. “Joining forces with a company that has shaped the cannabis landscape for decades is a clear demonstration of the power of collaboration,” they said.

So far, the Sensi Seeds x DNA Genetics Breeding Grounds collaboration has produced six autoflowering and feminized strains. Check them out here!

Champelli

California, USA

Standout collaboration strains:

Champelli is a true West Coast OG. Raised in Bernal Heights, San Francisco in the 1980s, he was immediately immersed in cannabis culture. He watched his brother grow in a small pantry as a kid, and began cultivating himself in middle school. Then, in the early 1990s, Champelli cemented his reputation as a breeder by creating the famous Champagne strain.

Today, Champelli runs an eponymous cannabis and fashion brand, inspired by West Coast hip-hop culture. His genetics get props from Snoop Dogg, Mac Dre, B-Real, and countless other rap/hip-hop icons. When the chance came to collaborate with Sensi Seeds (a brand he admired as a kid), Champelli didn’t think twice:

“Working with such a legendary brand is thrilling! We share a passion for the plant and a commitment to excellence in creating new strains. I’m excited for everyone to try the new genetics we’ve developed together,” Champelli says.

The Sensi Seeds x Champelli Breeding Grounds project has birthed 15 strains with absolutely wild terpene profiles combining gas, fruit, candy, and more. Check them out here.
